Victor Hugo wrote “To give thanks in solitude is enough. Thanksgiving has wings and goes where it must go. Your prayer knows much more about it than you do.” On this Thanksgiving Sunday, as I spent my morning editing photos from recent Vagabond Adventures, I came across the photo above and thought it was a perfect match for Hugo’s quote. I took this shot last Sunday on a drive from Victoria to Nanaimo for work. Along the way I stopped at Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Site for a lovely autumn hike and hopefully, some lighthouse snaps to add to my collection from the east coast. I was not disappointed (you can see all of my photos here)! Of course the lighthouse itself is a stunning piece of architecture but what drew me in was this scene above.
Nestled amongst some ancient rocks along the Pacific shore in front of the lighthouse, Parks Canada has graciously provided hikers with a lovely spot to sit and contemplate perhaps one of my most favourite views from all of my adventures. On this sunny, warm autumn day I sat quietly in the chair above and soaked in the sights and sounds of this magical place. Crashing surf. The haunting cry of seagulls. And a much appreciated moment of solitude where I could give thanks for the many gifts in my life. Not surprisingly this simple act of silent prayer brought me closer to my family who I miss dearly and more acutely this Thanksgiving. I felt my dear Dad with me, and grateful tears flowed like rain as they still sometimes do. I am so glad I have had the good fortune to spend many Thanksgivings with my family over the years. From fantastic turkey suppers at my sister Jen’s to the fall colour drives I would navigate with Mum and Dad, I knew then that these memories would be precious some day.
That day is today. On this Thanksgiving Day, hold on tight to your precious ones. Say I love you. And say it again!
